Chatham Maritime inside the home of the Copper Rivet Distillery

We’ve completed a series case study photography for Pillory Barn and Locate In Kent, including photographing at Chatham Maritime inside the home of the Copper Rivet Distillery at historic Pump House No. 5.

Launched in 2016, the Copper Rivet Distillery is the only spirit maker in Kent. They are one of the few craft distillers in Britain which owns the process of brewing and distilling spirits from grain to glass on site. Their approach is to use bespoke stills, fusing  modern methods with traditional influences to create, from scratch, small batches of unique gins, whiskies and vodkas. The wheat, barley and rye is locally grown.

You can hear one of the co-founders, Stephen Russell, tell more of their story :

Working around a video shoot schedule, I had thirty minutes to take a variety of editorial pictures of Stephen Russell, plus some cutaways of the distillery to form the introductory pages to Locate In Kent’s case study. Shooting towards the end of the day, there was still light pushing through the distinctive windows of the Grade II listed building, but I quickly deployed some portable to create a bit more of a “kick” where I needed it – but still from the same direction as the windows.

You can’t miss the bespoke 500-litre Banik gin still, named Janet after a Russell family member. The Banik still, which is patent pending, is built to Head Distiller Abhishek Banik’s specifications and enables the distillery to not only macerate but infuse the botanicals in its Dockyard Gin, creating a totally unique, one of a kind product.

To create the gin, select botanicals, carefully chosen to create the perfect balance of flavour, are macerated then infused in our Banik still, Janet, for twenty-four hours. This is then distilled for an eight hour period resulting in a gin with a dry, citrus floral top note, followed by a woody leathery mid note, and a refreshing aftertaste. The botanicals used include Italian juniper berries, locally sourced elderflower, Bulgarian coriander seeds, Spanish orange peel, Italian lemon peel, Guatemala green cardamom, European angelica root and orris root.
