Simon Mendes da Costa’s headshot and editorial shoot

Fanboy though I am of a portable studio light or two, I had the pleasure of working on Simon Mendes da Costa’s headshot and editorial shoot with natural light and a piece of foam board only. Why the foam board?  It makes a really lightweight and portable reflector that pops a tiny bit back into a face and lifts the eyes a little. It also reduces the amount of distractions that the person being photographed needs to cope with. Not many of my blog posts feature natural light because I usually find myself in dark places, so shooting Simon in this way was a welcome change.

If the name sounds familiar, Simon Mendes da Costa is a playright. His play Losing Louis premiered at The Hampstead Theatre, London, in 2005 and starred Lynda Bellingham and Alison Steadman. It went on to a West End run, UK and international tours. It also had a separate production on Broadway.
