Something for the weekend…it’s panto season (oh no it’s not – that’s at Christmas). Anyway, promo and publicity shots were required for Pop Idol star Gareth Gates, punk legend Toyah Willcox and Faye Brookes heading the cast of Sleeping Beauty at the Marlowe Theatre Canterbury (which also includes Katrina Bryan, better known as Nina from the CBeebies series Nina and the Neurons. Completing the line-up is Kent-born comedian Lloyd Hollett as the Storyteller.
Technical stuff – baking hot sun from one side and grey skies on the other. I had to get the Marlowe signage and building in the shot so that meant using the sun as a backlight and a 500W head at full power (no modifiers, just a reflector). The battery pack on the Bowens just about kept up. The reason for doing it that way was (i) to avoid the actors squinting into the sun (ii) to have control over the contrast and highlights in the final image. Mostly shot using a Canon 24-105L plus a 70-200 2.8L.
